荒れ地を開墾！3年後のあらかわの桃へ向けた「極上の土づくり」
収穫が終わっても、樹木は休むことなく生きています。翌年の素晴らしい実りのためには、オフシーズンのひとつひとつの丁寧なお世話の積み重ねが欠かせません。
さて、今回は耕作放棄地となっていた土地を一から開墾しました！
まずは一面の草刈りからスタート。次に、ショベルドーザーを使って頑固な根っこをしっかり削ぎ落としていきます。この工程を省いてしまうと、トラクターを入れたときに草の根が絡みついて作業が進まなくなってしまうため、とても大切な作業です。
昨日のショベルドーザー作業に続き、今日はトラクターで丁寧に整地。
ここから年末までは、土がパワーを蓄える「準備期間」です。
苦土石灰で土のバランスを整え、たっぷりの堆肥をしっかり混ぜ込みました。 じっくり時間を置くことで、土の中で発酵が進み、土壌がフカフカに柔らかくなっていきます。ミミズや微生物がたくさん住み着く「元気な土」に育っていくのを、ワクワクしながら待つ時間です。
この準備した土地で、これから３年ほど桃の苗木をじっくり育てていく予定です。人間で言えば、まさに「保育施設」のような場所ですね。
Clearing the Wasteland: Crafting Superior Soil for Arakawa Peaches 3 Years Out
Even after the harvest season comes to an end, our trees remain alive and well. To ensure a magnificent yield next year, painstaking, step-by-step care during the off-season is absolutely essential.
This time around, we took on the challenge of clearing a piece of abandoned farmland completely from scratch!
We kicked off the process by clearing away the dense overgrown grass across the entire plot. Next, we used a shovel dozer to thoroughly dig out and scrape away the stubborn, deeply rooted weed roots. Skipping this crucial step would mean the grass roots would tangle in the tractor later on, bringing everything to a grinding halt—making this an indispensable part of the process.
Following yesterday’s heavy machinery work with the shovel dozer, today we used the tractor to carefully level and smooth the terrain.
From now until the end of the year, the land enters its official “preparation phase”—a time for the soil to recharge and build up vital nutrients. We balanced the soil chemistry by applying dolomitic limestone and thoroughly mixing in generous amounts of compost. As time passes, natural fermentation will progress deep within the ground, transforming the soil into a soft, beautifully fluffy texture. It’s an exciting waiting period as we look forward to seeing a thriving, healthy environment take shape, rich with earthworms and beneficial microorganisms.
In this newly prepared land, we plan to lovingly nurture young peach saplings over the next three years. If we were to describe it in human terms, it really is just like creating a cozy “nursery” for our young trees!
