[Before & After] Why Prune Now Instead of Waiting for Winter? The Secret Behind Hashimura Farm’s Peaches!
Hello everyone! This is Hashimura Farm, where we grow and sell famous Arakawa peaches and other delicious fruits in Kinokawa City, Wakayama.
Today, we’d like to share a Before & After look at our peach tree pruning!
Why Prune “Now” Instead of Waiting for Winter?
Generally, many peach farmers prune their trees during the cold winter months after all the leaves have fallen. In fact, even neighboring farmers sometimes express concern, asking, “Isn’t it a bit too early?”
There is a specific reason for this caution: a condition known as Bacterial Shot Hole (Xanthomonas arboricola pv. pruni), which is one of the most feared diseases among peach growers.
What is Bacterial Shot Hole? It is a devastating disease that causes small holes in the leaves—leading to early leaf drop—and damages the precious fruit. The bacteria enter and spread through cuts or wounds on the branches via wind and rain.
Because of this, many farmers wait until winter out of fear that cutting branches while leaves are still present might trigger an infection.
So why do we purposely choose to prune now, while the leaves are still on the tree?
3 Key Benefits of Early Pruning
While avoiding the freezing winter cold is certainly a nice bonus (haha!), there are actually crucial advantages and careful reasons for pruning at this time:
-
Nutrient Accumulation for Next Year
By removing unnecessary branches early, the tree can store and concentrate its nutrients for next season’s growth.
-
Even Sunlight Distribution
By looking down at the trees from above, we thin out overlapping branches to ensure sunlight reaches every single leaf and branch evenly.
-
Maximizing the Effect of Autumn Disease Prevention
Clearing out excess branches ahead of time allows our essential autumn preventative spray to penetrate deeply and evenly into the inner branches.
As a result, this practice effectively shields our trees from Bacterial Shot Hole!
Professional Care & Attention
Of course, we take extreme precautions to manage any risk. We strictly avoid pruning on rainy days or when the branches are wet, using precision and craftsmanship with every cut.
Pruning carefully during a season that is gentle on the body—ensuring every leaf gets ample sunlight—is our secret to keeping the trees healthy and harvesting large, delicious peaches year after year.
Look Forward to Next Year’s Harvest!
We put our heart and soul into caring for our peach trees. Please look forward to next year’s harvest! We will continue working hard to bring you the finest Arakawa peaches.
